Bowling first
Hazel Divers gave her Mona Vale Bowling Club its first women’s champion-of-champions pairs title when in partnership with Iris Selwood she beat Grace Ryan (Christchurch-Richmond), 1917, in yesterday’s final at Shirley. Mrs Ryan was partnered by Beryl Hartwell. In difficult wind conditions which led to some very scattered heads, Mrs Divers played the steadier bowls on the earlier ends and was soon 9-0 up. The Christchurch-Richmond pair played better in the middle stages and recovered to 1314 before Mrs Divers edged ahead again for her deserved win.
In the semi-finals, Mrs Divers scored three points on the last two ends to win a tight battle 19-16, with Vera Thompson (Oxford), whose lead was Freda Payne. In the other semi-final, Mrs Ryan maintained an early lead to eliminate April McDonald (Burwood), 18-13. Mrs McDonald was partnered by Valerie Gylestera. Results of the quarterfinals: — Mrs Divers 20. J. Walker (Shirley) 11; Mrs Thompson 17, E. McCallum (Shaw Avenue) 14; Mrs Ryan 18, B. Spear (Edgeware) 10; Mrs McDonald 25, R. Berry (Linwood) 12.
