Hard time coining for trees

Some Drainage Board sharing may be undertaken . in a Christchurch City CounI cil proposal to plant trees ; between the Estuary and the ; city’s sewage oxidation ponds. But the board’s chief engineer (Mr P. J. McWilliam) told the construction and treatment works committee that it would not be easy to keep young trees alive in the foreshore’s harsh environment.

Trees planted by the board experienced the hardest time near the Estuary, he said. Between the Estuary and the board land was a reserve strip about 20 metres wide. Erosion along some parts ■of the shore had removed the strip and cut into board land. However, other parts of the reserve were protected by a council-main-tained sea wall.

Only a few species of tree could survive. Mr McWilliam said; and even these would require regular attention for the first few years.
