Nominees for F.O.L. executive
PA Wellington Eight trade-union officials will run for six executive positions on the Federation of Labour this year. Of the present executive of six only Mr S. I. Wheatley (Dairy Workers) has declined renomination. Among the challengers are the president of the Wellington Trades Council (Mr P. J. Kelly), who is also secretary of the Wellington Cleaners’ and Caretakers’ Union; the industrial advisory officer of the Wellington Shop Employees’ Union (Mrs S. M. L. Davies); and the president of the Plumbers and Gasfitters’ Union and president of the Southland Drivers’ union (Mr E. H. Soper), who is a former secretary of the Southland Trades Council. Sitting members standing again, according to a list of nominations announced yesterday after an F.O.L. executive meeting, are Messrs W. R. Cameron, secretary of the Canterbury Freezing Workers’ Union and president of the Canterbury Trades Council; K. G. Douglas, secretary of the. Wellington Drivers’ Union and secretary of the Wellington Trades Council; A. Russ, secretary of tire Carpenters’ Union; F. B. Thom, secretary of the Clothing Trades Union; and E. G. Thompson, secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Federation. The F.O.L. vice-president (Mr J. A. Boomer), who is secretary of the Engineers’ Union, is unopposed. The executive will be elected by secret ballot at the F. annual conference in May. Elections for the post of secretary and president of the F.O.L. will not be held until 1980 and 1981 respectively.
