N.Z.-bred Karaman has strong claims

Time is getting round to the Golden Slipper, set down for March 11, at the Sydney Turf Club meeting at Rosehill. This, the richest two-year-old race In the Southern Hemisphere, has grown steadily in importance since its inception in 1957 when Todman, starting at 6 to 1 on. won by eight lengths to begin a run of five wins for the progeny of Star Kingdom (imp.). Todman in due course, sired two winners, and last year Kaoru Star, another son of Star Kingdom, was represented by the amazing winner, Luskin Star. With the approach of the running date, every juvenile winner is looked at as a likely contender for the limited field. It has taken the New Zealandbred Karaman. three wins in succession to peg his claim for consideration as a starter.
The third win came on Saturday at Flemington, in Melbourne. where he won the Critedon Handicap run over 1200 m. He will mn in the Blue Diamond Stakes a» Caulfield next Satur-d-’v and the stable is pretty confid nt that Karaman can carry or this *30,000 race Karaman is one of the second, by th* xoung sire, Karayar, and he is the fifth foal from his d J ” r ’ Gav Theme. He is by Silver Shark, a descendant of Relic through Buisson Ardent, and his third dam was Rivaz, the sister to Nasrulilah, and a top two-year-old of her year in England.
Gay Theme is by Lionhearted (son of Never Say Die) from Windy Mede, which was by Underwood from RascolL by Ruthless.
Along the line of her descent have come many brilliant sprinters. including Misere, Fashion Plate, and Mary Quant.
