50,000 target set for abortion petition
The petition opposing the new abortion law, which is being compiled by the Canterbury Repeal organisation between Kaikoura and Ashburton, is expected to have more than 50,000 signatories before it closes at the end of March. The Christchurch coordinator for Repeal (Mrs Honor Bonisch) said that she based this figure on the enthusiastic response received so far and the fact that suburban areas still had to be canvassed. People seemed to be signing the petition in protest against the manner in which the abortion law was pushed
through Parliament as much as in opposition to the provisions of the law, she said. One big Christchurch company had returned completed petition forms with a covering letter stating that the petition had almost the total support of employees, who represented a wide crosssection of society. Mrs Bonisch said the aim of the Repeat petition, which is being circulated throughout New Zealand, was to have the present law repealed and a renew instigated by Parliament to get legislation which was more humane and realistic.
