Weaker market in Australia

Gold stocks attracted buying interest ip otherwise weaker markets 'in Australia yesterday. Industrial shares were lower, and there was a barely steady market for the mining leaders.

B.H.P. eased 4c to 528 c on continuing problems with its E.E.C. steel sales. The Bank of New South Wales gave up another 4c to 526 c, and other banks were generally weaker, where changed. Building, brewing, retailing, and second-line stocks moved lower. Brokers said that the onset of the seasonal taxdrain was keeping buyers out of the market. Coals, uraniums, and oils moved lower. Pancontinental dropped 80c to 990 c in Melbourne on • criticism of the company’s environmental-im-pact statement. Base metals miners were mixed, but C.R.A., and Bougainville were firmer. Central Norseman closed steady at 930 c after a strong rise in morning trading along with other gold stocks.
