Two-year-olds show dash
Latchmi and Aramis, rival candidates for the Baker Juvenile Handicap at Nelson on Saturday, sprinted attractively in training at Riccarton yesterday. Latchmi was paired with her stablemate Karastello and ran 600 metres on the plough in 36.6. It was good work by both members of the Thistoll team, who will be ridden by Michael Mein at Nelson. Latchmi has obvious claims to attention at Nelson after her recent win on her home course. Aramis found stronger finishing speed to shade his stablemate Merrybud at the end of 1000 metres. They were up to speed slowly, but ran the last 800 m in 49.6, and hurried in from the 600 in 36.8. David Walsh will ride Aramis at Nelson on Saturday. On the trial grass Joint Effort and Town and Coun-
try recorded 1:32.6 for 1400, and 38.2 for the last 600. Joint Effort is top weight and a logical fancy for the high-weight at Nelson on Saturday after an easy win on his home track earlier this month. Capital and Biddy Magee went about their work with a will while running 600 in 37.4. Panic was not at full stretch to stay clear of Ernest while running 600 in 38.6. Fairy Cross dropped behind them into a gap and came back lame. Ton Grade ran in from the 600 in 38.6. Princess Velvet was shading Yakcam finishing 600 in 37.4. Cloudy Joe, one of few tried on the trial grass, hurried in from the 600 in 36.8. Stoney Topaz and Rustique, which will run for Peter Jones’s stable in the Turuturu Lodge Handicap .at Nelson, started from the 1200 metres and were home ifrom the 600 in. 37.2.
