Lord Brigade impresses
Lord Brigade, which is to race at the Metropolitan Club’s meeting next Wednesday, shaped encouragingly when he won his heat of the two-year-old parade at trials held at Addington Raceway yesterday. Lord Brigade, driven by Kevin Williams, led from end to end and without being pushed he had two lengths to spare over Bo Brummell, with Seafield Rose making ground for third clear of Poseidon. The winner took 2min 45.8 sec for the 2000 m, the last 800 m in Imin 3.25. The other heat saw Black Gypsy finish boldly wide out to shade Tom Thumb by half a length. Genesis was a similar distance back third, ahead of Casual Time, which came on strongly.
The 2000 m took 2min 52.45, the last 800 m in Imin 1.65.
Tom Thumb led out, but after 800 m he was passed by Genesis, which broke and lost 3s at the start. Genesis was not pushed near the finish and looked to be pacing
easily at the line. He is in the Timaru Nursery Stakes on Saturday, but has drawn the second line. As a result he will need luck to secure a clear run early. Only three pacers qualified A-grade and a similar number graduated B-grade. Times were affected by an easterly wind.
Super Knight, Waitaki Gold and Gaelic Prince earned A-grade rating, while those in the other category were Battle Free, Bolt In and Another Chance. There were disqualifications for galloping in both heats for trotters. Kotare Flight won the first heat by 24 lengths, but he was disqualified for breaking 600 m after the start. Fey Garrison qualified A-grade in the other heat in which Coastalong was disqualified from second for breaking near the finish. The third place-getter, Grace Nevele gained a B-grade rating. Tarport Folly, Hurricane Royal, Caithness and Pumpkin won B-grade trials and graduated to the higher class.
