Hasty Charger may topple favourite

Special correspondent , Palmerston North The chances are that Hasty: Charger might not find herseii: out of her depth in the D. J. I Barry Memorial at the Poverty! Bay meeting at Gisborne today. She has shown herself to be a capable mare at a middle distance and meets useful but provincial type opposition in today’s first leg. > Since winning at Thames in the New Year, Hasty Charger has had only the one run where she finished third behind Apostle and Tamboura at the Matamata meeting on February 4. She has in her favour that she is under the care of Matamata trainer Jim Gibbs. On past visits to Gisborne Gibbs has invariably produced his share of winners and the Hasty Cloud mare could continue the run for him.

Another, light-weight. Wairere Girl, is not to be overlooked. She was twice a winner at Wairoa, with a second placing in between so obviously is as fit and tuned tor the race as any. Irish Duke must also be considered. He was a good second In the Wairoa Cup and previously has done well on the track. He is not an easy horse to ride, but given the right conditions will be a fine prospect. The top-weights Optica and Marie Kay are good value in this type of class and must have their share of supporters. The Hastings duo of Top Lady and Midnight Oak look the ones to beat in the second leg. the Beach Memorial. Top Lady was forced to race amongst the open sprinters at Wairoa. but she acquitted herself well and is not harshly treated by the handicapper.

Midnight Oak failed on the second day at Wairoa after being an impressive winner there the first day. With the chance to freshen since then and back to 1600 m he will be one of the day’s best chances. Selections:—
