Progress League
Sir, — With the establishment of a convention bureau to promote Christchurch as a conference centre and engage in other public relations activities, the future of the Public Relations Office of the Canterbury Progress League is being reassessed, especially as both the bureau and office require public funding. Some people apparently think that the league’s existence depends on its continuing operation of the office. However, the league existed for many years independently, fulfilling a useful public role discussing issues important to Canterbury, formulating policies and taking action. As a league member for several years, I was particularly interested in this aspect and felt, indeed, that there could be some conflict of interests between this action-group function and public relations or promotional functions. I see no reason why the league should not have an assured future fulfilling its traditional role, meeting expenses from subscriptions with a degree of public financing. — Yours, etc., HELEN HERVEY.
