Birth rate drops further
PA Wellington There was a decrease in live births in the vear ended December 31, 1977, according to the Government Statistician. A total of 54,087 live births were registered, compared with 55,105 for 1976, and 56,639 for 1975. The annual birth rate per 1000 mean population was 17.29 last year, compared with 17.68 for 1976, and 18.35 for 1975. The figures for the December quarter were down. too. The equivalent annual birth rate was 17.02. compared with 17.66 and 18.12 for the December quarters of 1976 and 1975, respectively. At the same time there was an increase in the number of deaths last year — 15,970. compared with 25,457 for 1976. and 25,114 for 1975. The natural increase or the ’xcess of births over deaths, ncreased the population bv '8.117 last year, compared ith 29,648 in 1976, and 31,525 sn 1975.
