Retail sales up
PA Wellington Retail sales during the December, 1977, quarter were 5.3 per cent higher than for the same quarter in 1976, according to the Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris). Retail sales amounted to 51438.46 M compared with $1366.13 in 1976. When adjusted for a population change as well as price changes, turnover per head of population was 9.1 per cent lower than in the corresponding 1976 quarter. With seasonal fluctuations taken into consideration as well, turnover per head during the December quarter.
1977, showed a 3.2 per cent decrease from the September, 1977 quarter ($253.36M for December compared with $261.74M for September). On this basis, retail sales per head during the September, 1977, quarter were 3.8 per cent lower than for the June. 1977, quarter. Household appliance stores were the only type to show a decrease in turnover — .7.2 per cent. All other store types recorded higher turnovers than in the corresponding quarter of 1976. Chemists had the highest increase, 17.3 per cent, with grocers and dairies the next highest with 10.3 per cent.
