Abortions in Australia
Sir, — Erica Jordan describes emotions which all of us involved in the fight for women's rights know well, and sympathise with. Yet, if she is truly at peace with her decision to keep her child, why does she want to stop other women f'-eely making their own
decisions? Or is it. perhaps, that the decision was forced on her and she wants company in suffering this oppression? She savs she
wants to help mothers in practical wavs while fighting to p r ev§pt abortions. Yet in practice" over a hundred
women a week are being forced to suffer financial hardship, delays, and extra anxiety because they have to go to Australia. Many are only too familiar with the joys of motherhood. Two I recently met on their way through Christchurch were both solo mothers on the domestic purposes benefit, living alone without any support, and for whom an unexpected $5OO debt is a terrible burden. — Yours, etc., ALAN L. WILKINSON. February 20, 1978.
