Alcohol 'a gift from God’
A man who founded a youth movement in Ireland to make teen-agers aware of the use and abuse of alcohol will visit New Zealand later this month. He is the Rev. Bernard McGuckian, a Jesuit priest who will visit schools throughout New Zealand to explain how his organisation, “Renewal and Youth,” is helping young people in Ireland and Britain.
The organisation urges its members to abstain from alcohol until they reach the legal drinking age, and teaches them moderation in the use of alcohol, and the dangers caused by its misuse.
Fr. McGuckian founded the movement in 1972 as a “spin-off” from the teetotal Irish Pioneer movement. “Reward and Youth” wants to get across the message that alcohol is one of God’s gifts, and if it is used wisely it will bring happiness. If it is abused then it will lead to endless misery and unhappiness, he says.
Fr McGuckian will spend a few hours in Christchurch on February 26 before travelling to Wellington and Auckland.
