Team off to drag engine out

PA Nelson A Nelson recovery team has hired a train from the Railways Department in a bid to remove a rare steam engine from the wilds of the Buller Gorge. The “Higgins Special” will pull out of Inangahua Junction late this afternoon as a self-contained unit, hauling a big bulldozer, a log skidder, a rubber-tyred loader, and other gear that will be used to bring to bear a 75ton heave to dislodge an old sawmill power unit. The unit has been overgrown and imbedded partly in swamp since World War 11.

On board the train will be a party of 12 enthusiasts led by a member of the Waimea County Council (Cr R. Higgins) who have already investigated the area in the Lower Buller Gorge, across the river from the main highway and accessible only by rail.

The steam engine was installed in 1930-40 to power a new sawmill at Rahui. a siding about 14km bv rail from Inangahua Junction. It is a Marshall, built about 190 S. Whan uncovered in its swamny position it was found to be in remarkably good condition.
