High surfing standard
FA Dunedin Competitors inthe New Zealand Surf Riders' Association championships had a taste of quality surf at Sandfly Bay on the Otago Peninsula on Monday during the second round of competition. The “man-on-man” stage of the contest began on Monday and the surfers were pushing themselves to the limit to avoid the sudden-death elimination. Graham Carse (Dunedin), relishing the bigger waves and using his knowledge of local conditions, stole the show with an exhibition of radical surfing. Carse and Rex Huben. also from Dunedin, are two of only six South Island surfers among the Ifi who will contest the quarter-
finals. The other four are from Christchurch. All the surfing on Monday was of a very high standard, but one long tube-ride by Brad Mayor (Waihi) was undoubtedly the wave of the day. ; The draw for the quarter-finals | is: P. Bennett (Christchurch v. C. I ricklebank (Mt Maunganuii; M. Shanks (Auckland; v. L. Carragher (Christchurch); T. Deken (New Plymouth) or S. Coates (Auckland; v. B. Mayor (Waihi*-. D.
