Long swim to Rowe
Paul Rowe (Wharenui) beat the title-holder of the past three years, Michael Smith (Wharenui), to win the Canterbury longdistance swimming championship at Diamond Harbour. Rowe covered the three miles in 48min lasec, just over a minute faster than Smith. Vicki Morris (Pegasus, won the women’s title, also over three miles. The junior titles, over two miles, were won by Chris Ellis Wharenui) and Lorraine Bishop Pegasus). Results were:— Senior men.—Rowe 48:15, 1: Smith. 49:30. 2; K. Bishop (Pegasus), 52:23, 3. Junior boys.—Ellis, 34:30, 1; B. Suck (Wharenui), 34:30.5. 2; F. McMaster (Beckenham). 42:45, 3. Senior women.—Miss Morris. >8:37, 1. Junior girls.—Miss Bishop. 17:45, 1; S. Tully (Beckenham). 42:55, 2; C. Pearce (Beckenham). 12:55.2, 3.
