FLYING HIGH
A colleague who recently flew half-way round the world and back on an assignment for “The Press” decided, when he got to Sydney on the return flight, that it was time to think about relaxing. He was also aware that his divorce had been completed, in his absence, after a very long wait; and that there was a lady friend waiting in Christchurch who would feel the whole occasion called for a celebration. So he bought a bottle of champagne at Sydney Airport before he ambled on to his early morning flight to Christchurch. Be-
cause someone else was paying, he found himself in the novel situation of flying first class. He decided to test the service. “Could you keep that on ice for me, please,” he asked the chief steward, dead nonchalant, and producing the bottle of champagne. The steward, a sound Australian, looked aghast. “Crikey, mate—sir,” he said. “We do have champagne on board. You don’t have to bring your own booze, you know.” But when the situation was explained he happily consented to chill the passenger’s bottle. So our colleague enjoyed a cham-
pagne breakfast, and his own bottle was nicely cool by the time they reached Christchurch. And—other perks of first-class travel —our traveller was first off the plane, first through immigration and customs, found his luggage came off first. He was home, sprawled in the sun with his jubilant lady friend, and into the still-cold bottle of duty free champers, he reckons, while the lot from economy class were still explaining to immigration how many farms they hadn't visited in the last three months.
