Southland bats out

A negative cricket match at Garrick Park ended yesterday with Southland securing a draw but little honour from its game with Christchurch Suburban. Christchurch Suburban declared 27 runs behind at 12.30 p.m. but the Southland captain, Denis Cocks, made no effort to seek a decision. He batted his team’s second innings out, still at the crease for a tidy 43. Earlier, the Christchurch innings had been distinguished by an aggressive and accomplished innings from Dave Quested, which enabled his team to encourage Southland to make a match of it. It did not, and solid batting right down the line meant that, without a declaration, a result was never in prospect. Southland 263 and 198/7 (J. J. Ryan 52, D. S. Cocks 43 not out, B. Crawford 34, J. Masefield 23, T. Ward 22; N. Sloan 3/44, D. Quested 2/37) drew with Christchurch Suburban 236/6 declared. (Quested 92, B. Pearce 27; P. Young 2/34. Stevenson 2/51).
