NZPA-Reuter Washington; United States officials’ have criticised Japan’s plans to reduce its huge trade surplus for not going far; enough. As the two countries enter a second round of negotiations the officials, after discussions with the Japanese Foreign Trade Minister (Mr Nobuhiko Ushiba) said an eight-point Japanese package was insufficient. But Mr Ushiba, briefing
Japanese reporters, said; there was little room for’ ’ further Japanese con- | cessions. The United States wants Japan to run a balance-of-payments deficit and substantially reduce its trade surplus to help sustain global economic recovery. Japan’s balance-of-pay-ments surplus if estimated at up to SNZBSOOM for the year ending March, 1978. and its trade surplus is estimated at BNZI7OOM.
