Gerulaitis pushed in tennis
NZPA Sydney. The travel wearied American, Vitas Gerulaitis won his first round match in the Marlboro New South Wales open tennis tournament yesterday over fellow countryman Mike Cahill. Gerulaitis had to overcome jetlag and the cold and windy White City courts in his 6-7. 6-3, 6-2 effort. Gerulaitis will now meet Britain’s John Lloyd, who had a stylish straight sets win over Queenslander Paul Kronk late last night. John Feaver (Great Britain; went down to 33-year-old John .Newcombe who, turning back the clock five years, won 6-2, 6-2. Australia’s queen of the courts, Evonne Cawley, confirmed her top women’s seeding with an effortless 6-2. 6-0 victory over Pat Gregg. Another seeded player went down when Queenslander. Ross Case succumbed to American, Brian Teacher. Case, seeded number 14. bowed out. 6-3. 6-0.
