Canterbury dog back

After his unsuccessful bid In the Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park, Smokey Hobbs, the outstanding Canterbury greyhound, has returned to Christchurch. The brindle Old Hobbs dog will be off the scene for some time, however. He lost condition in Australia and was inconvenienced by a blister injury in his Cup attempt. Mr Alf Shearman, who is caring for the dog while his owners are still in Australia, said that the dog might be fit for the Wellington Cup but added that plans were still indefinite. Another leading Canterbury dog, Miss Valley Inn, has returned to Australia after running unplaced in the New Zealand championship final earlier this month.
