Southland takes first home golf invitation series
Southland, on its home course at Otatara in Invercargill, withheld a late challenge from Waikato to win the inaugural Southland amateur golf invitational at the week-end, reports the Press Association from Invercargill.
The three-round stroke-, play event could not have: had a better finish if it had! been planned. Going into thei last round. Southland was one stroke in front of Auckland, on the best four scores from the five-man teams. *fter the first two rounds. However, by the time nine holes had been played, Southland looked as if it was going to cruise home.! But, while Auckland’s threat died, the Waikato team had a much improved day, and when Southland's number one, Jim Lapsley stood on the last tee, he had to par the hole for Southland to ivin. His tee shot landed behind' a stand of small trees but he played a fine six iron through the trees and ended about 1.5 m off the green. His resultant chip shot landed about the same distance past the hole. The gallery, which was well aware of the situation Lapsley was in, waited for his playing partners, Ted McDougall and Phil Reid, to play out their shots and 1 then followed Lapsley’s putt into the hole all the way. 1 Southland’s winning score • ivas 923. i It was the relative con- ! sistency of the local team that gave it the advantage in I the blustery conditions that'; prevailed throughout the] tournament. L Whereas it had rained I] Intermittently on Saturday,! when the first two rounds 1
(Were played, yesterday was fine but with the wind still I blowing. i However, the air was .much warmer and all the players appreciated the improved conditions. Colin Taylor was the most consistent of the Waikato team and took the individual prize that was held in conjunction with the teams’ event. A veteran golfer, Ross Murray was popular with the crowds and took second place in the individual play. His team, the Southland invitational team, which also contained McDougall, was a threat after two rounds but ’its play fell away in the last round and it finished fourth on 928. At a manager’s meeting held on the final morning, a resolution was passed that the tournament become an annual fixture on the amateur calendar and that the next tournament be held in March, 1979. The resolution will be forwarded to the Golf Association for approval. Scores (with the worst score in each round deleted): 923— Southland (J. H. Lapsley, 77, 76, 77; K. R. Downie. 76. 85, 85; P. R.
