Use of school hall denied

Sir, — In the United States some school boards still outlaw the teaching of evolution. By denying the Native Forests Action Council the use of the school hall for its Easter meeting (“The Press” West Coast edition,’ November 18) the Greymouth High School Board has succumbed to factional pressure. Teachers in high schools on the coast have been publicly accused of “teaching conservation." Will the board next outlaw such teachings? The board considered the group “might not have the interests of the community as its aim.” Yet it has failed to recognise that there are West Coast members of the Action Council with a deep concern for the long-term future of their community. Sharing of ideas and dialogue between all interest groups might have been achieved at this

meeting in the heart of Westland — something an educational body should surely promote rather than prevent. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) U. A. Christian, Secretary, Native Forests Action Council, Christchurch Branch. November 22, 1977.
