Release of salmon smelt in Rakaia
Several thousand quinnat salmon smolt will be marked and released into the Rakaia River in January by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Scientists of the Ministry ’s Fisheries Research Division hope to follow the fish down to the lagoon at the rivermouth to establish how long they take to get there. Nets will be used at intervals to check the progress of the smolt. Netting will also be
done in the Rakaia lagoon in November to check the size of young salmon in the area. When the marked fish eventually reach the lagoon, scientists hope to discover how long they stay there before heading to sea. The Ministry, was anxious that anglers should know what was going on during the netting operations, said the scientist in charge of the experiment (Mr C. L. Hopkins).
