Vital softball encounter
Monowai will have tOf work hard to retain its win-n-ng streak when it clashes | with Bumside in the senior! women’s softball competition) today. | Both teams lead the; present round with eight! noints so far and neither has, lost a game. However, Bumside isj likely to be thinking of its) last encounter with Monowai last March, when it was I thrashed, 16-1. Monowai has a skilled and experienced line-up of play-' ers and Bumside has played! consistently this season even, though it had to struggle toi beat Jaks United, 3-1, two! weeks ago. Robyn Storer’s pitching!
ability is unequalled inj Christchurch women’s softball and her morale was boosted last Saturday by a homer and a three-bag hit. Penny King, Susannah Carroll, Storer, Ranui Hapi, and Marilyn Lee are included in the Canterbury A squad and are among the Bumside batters who steadily build up runs. Kath Noonan is also a valuable asset and is always there easing Bumside away from any predicaments. Monowai, too, has a wealth of ability including Wiki Martin, Annie Wansbrough, Margaret Machirus, Gwen Gray and Philippa Maclean, who have all been named in the A squad. i
j Gray is in fine form and I last week hit two home runs and took two excellent catches. However, Bev Makinson will not be available as pitcher again today and Monowai will miss the reliable pitcher-catcher combination of Nancy Beale and Makinson. Both teams will need to tighten up their fielding as Bumside made six errors against Albion last week while Monowai made eight against Jaks United the previous week. The game today promises to be close and errors could mean the difference between winning and losing.
