Bill unlucky
PA Wellington Barnacle Bill was the unlucky yacht in Saturday’s first race of the Southern Cross southern zone trials. The race was a 40-mile harbour event.
After a good start Bryan Colman and his crew had worked Barnacle Bill into a three-minute lead over Whispers of Wellington at the end of the first spinnaker run. Barnacle Bill was showing the form that two years ago made it a member of New Zealand’s Admirals Cup team.
Bad luck struck when their genoa ripped on the next beat, leaving them undercanvassed for the rest of the day.
Whispers soon picked up and passed Barnacle Bill while the crew was changing headsails. From then on Barnacle Bill could only cling on to Whispers, but did not have the boat speed to pass it.
Whispers was first boat over the line, two minutes ahead of Barnacle Bill. Third home was Brian Millar’s Koamaru, a light-weather performer who found Saturday’s conditions not to its liking. Thundercloud was fourth over the line. The second race, a 210mile double-points haul, started yesterday morning. The first yachts should arrive back tonight.
