Mauger sets new record

PA Auckland Being a speedway champion is to ride in four races, win each one and set a new track record in the process—such was the achievement of the five' times world motor-cycle solo champion, Ivan Mauger, on Saturday night at Western Springs Stadium. In spite of riding a he termed “mechanically” after a hectic past few days in which he had travelled from Britain and received the New Zealand Sportsman-of-the-Year award in Wellington, Mauger was able to lead by about 75 yards in the first two races.

His times were lowered progressively. In the first race he rode to within o.2sec of his four-laps record set in March this year, then it was to within O.lsec before breaking the record by o.Bsec in the third race. In his fourth ride, Mauger appeared to be content to ride only to win. Still, the effort was good enough to have equalled his March record.
