Nelson wins Cup cricket

Nelson was a comfortable 1 winner against North Canterbury in a Hawke Cup cricket elimination match at Rangiora at the week-end. Nelson scored the winning runs just before lunch yesterday and it was probably just as well, as heavy rain might have ruled out play in the afternoon.

North Canterbury, batting first, started well enough with an opening partnership of 46 between Peter Williams and Peter Develin, but the later batsmen failed to consolidate.

After Devlin’s dismissal, Alan Jenkins showed a positive approach and deservedly top-scored with 39. Jenkins also received the trophy for the most outstanding fieldsman in the match.

The Nelson medium-pace

attack was accurate and it was well-supported by good fielding. Chasing 172 for victory, Nelson started poorly, losing two wickets for 21, but Matthew Toynbee and Chris Dodd were associated in a productive third-wicket partnership of 69 that took Nelson within sight of victory. Terry Horne, who has gained senior experience in Christchurch club cricket with Toynbee, made a useful 46 not out and Nelson reached its target for the loss of six wickets. Chris Abbott, with two wickets, was the best of the North Canterbury attack.
