Snooker tourney to Meredith
The Canterbury cueist, David Meredith, has had yet another major success. Already the winner of the Canterbury and New Zealand snooker titles this year, Meredith was successful in an invitation $2OOO tournament at Henderson over the week-end.
Twenty of the country’s leading players took part and in the final Meredith beat John Mutch, of South Auckland, who won the Garden City classic in Christchurch earlier this year, five frames to three. Meredith beat the other Canterbury entrant, Brian Kirkness, in the quarterfinals. His best breaks in the I final were 63 and 62, but in the section rounds he made I a century break — a very I rare achievement in snooker in New Zealand.
Bridge.—A Wellington four won the national contract bridge teams’ championship for the Wilkinson Salver. The team was; A. J. Thomson (captain), Mrs Thomson, R. Patterson and G. M. O’Donovan.
Soccer.—Kuwait trounced Hong Kong. 4-0, in a World Cup .Asian qualifying match in Kuwait. In another match, at Teheran, Iran drew, 2-all, with South Korea.
