Stable quinella in big sprint
The Woodville trainer, Eric Ropiha, spent Saturday afternoon at the Waipukurau Show but he displayed a lively interest from that distance in the result of The Stewards at Riccarton. Small wonder.
Ropiha sent two runners south for the second leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club's T.A.B. double, and they brought off a notable quihella for the stable. Silver Liner, in the hands of Brent Thomson, came from last and won by a length from Revistan, the mount of the Gore apprentice. Jim Collett. Silver Liner is a four-year-old mare by Sovereign Edition and the first foal of Ajasco, winner of The Stewards in the same colours, those of Mr Arthur Fell, of the Fairdale Stud, Palmerston North, six years
Silver Liner stumbled slightly soon after the start and was last of the 11-horse field for the opening 400 m.
Thomson kept her to the inside, moved her out to clear the tiring Leroy Brown, then took her forward quickly for a challenge at the hot favourite. Sly Wink.
There was only a brief flicker of resistance from
I Sly Wink, and Silver Liner (had it safely won 200 m out, ! doggedly though Revistan l finished.
i This might have been SBrent Thomson’s final ride tin the Canterbury Jockey Club’s long-established (sprint race. He is well on with plans to settle in Australia early in the New Year, but hopes to ride in the Auckland Cup before his departure. His Auckland Cup (mount might be Silver ; Liner’s stablemate. Harp, (which races in the same I interests as The Stewards I winner. ‘ > I Stevo, another North Isjland sprinter brought south I only for The Stewards, completed the rout of first-day (sprint form by finishing third. Conbrio, a distant second (behind Sly Wink on the first .day of the meeting, outfinished the Levin filly i this time to earn fourth money.
