Winning this time...

The Radio New Zealand race caller, Reon Murtha, found success in a different role at Motukarara raceway: yesterday, when he drove the three-year-old filly, Sarabelle, to victory in the News Media Stakes. A deserved winner, Reon had Sarabelle away smartly and soon trailing the pacemaker All Trouble (Shelley •Caldwell) which finished second, three lengths back, ahead of Jimmy Gordon (R. Bryant) another three lengths back, third, in what proved to be a very spreadout finish.

There were only seven starters as the Radio I representative, Allan Gaskill, became a late scratching when he struck transport problems getting to Christchurch from Auckland. As the all weather track inside the grass circuit was | severely affected by rain, it was decided to run the News Media Stakes and the Retired Drivers races on the grass track. Don Nyhan won the retired drivers race with Battle Lord ahead of Orfeo (Maurice Holmes). Teacher’s Pride (George Noble), was third.
