Short-lived 'Plessie’ sensation

A reminder of the “Great Plessie Hunt” earlier this year loomed into the minds of the crew of the Coastal Ranger as she left Lyttelton Harbour, bound for Wellington, yesterday afternoon.

Wallowing in the water off Godley Head was a large dark mass, surrounded by feeding sharks and seagulls atop it.

On inspection, however, the “sea monster” turned out to be a dead whale, its species unknown.
