World final in N.Z.?
New Zealand will hold the world speedway championship final within the next five years if Ivan Mauger, New Zealand sportsman of the year and five times world speedway champion, has his way. The idea is not new. Mauger first approached the Federation of International Motor-cycling (F.IJVL) about six or seven years ago after he had won the world title for the third time. At that stage the F.IM.
took little time to reject the idea, saying that It would have to be held out of season if held in this part of the world, that it would be too expensive, and that everyone would have to travel too far. However Mauger met the F.IM. three weeks ago in Caracas, Venezuela, and put forward the proposal again. He believes the arguements of six or seven years ago do not stand up today and in five years or
so it will be even more feasible to hold the event in New Zealand. New Zealand riders have a better record in the event than any other nation. Mauger, Barry Briggs and Ronnie Moore have had numerous wins, seconds and thirds.
Mauger believes that two New Zealand tracks, Western Springs (Auckland) and Templeton (Christchurch) are as good if not better than any in the world.
“I think we have a foot in the door,” said Mauger. “All we have to do is keep pushing.”
