University’s spending
Sir, —It is no wonder that taxes are high, in New Zealand, when nearly $l5 million is spent in one year by the University of Canterbury for the benefit of only 7300 students at a cost of over
C. G. MARSHALL. November 2, 1977.
$2OOO a student. Some 65 per cent of total expenditure goes on salaries and wages. When many are on $15,000 to $22,000 a year it is no wonder education is a burden on the taxpayer. Should a small country like this be spending $95 millions a year for under 10 per cent of our youth, for higher education when there are so few positions available, because of our size? Now we read that the University of Canterbury expects to run at a deficit of $250,000 next year. As all of us have to adjust to the economic climate, so should the universities. One way would be to reduce their staff on salaries some four and one half times ' that of a working man.— Yours, etc.,
