Five Christchurch Labour members of Parliament called on Thursday evening for a second container crane at Lyttelton in the interests of the New Zealand economy land Canterbury ’s economy tn (particular. 1 The interests of Canter 'bury were at stake over the issue, said a statement by Mr B. Connelly (Wigram). “The decision to grant .Port Chalmers a second con tainer crane means that all container ports in New Zea land except Lyttelton will now have two cranes,” they said "With the number of con tainer vessels now calling at New Zealand ports — and | they will Increase — the time has come for a second crane to be approved for Lyttelton. "Otherwise the Canterburyregion will be adversely I affected. I “The Minister of Transport should immediately look into | this in the interests of the New Zealand economy gener1 ally and the economic and I social interests of Canterbury in particular.”
