Scientists at penguin rookeries

New Zealand’s first Antarctic field party of the summer left Scott Base this week to open the Canterbury University field station at Cape I Bird. Two zoologists were flown; to the station by helicopter; after cloudy weather delayed' their departure on Saturday.' The delay will not affect the party’s work programme —studying the behaviour of Adelie penguins, which flock to the Cape Bird rookeries each breeding season. Penguins are already beginning to nest at the cape, according to one of _ the scientists. Two other biologists from Canterbury University will also work at Cane Bird later in the season. Four New Zealanders are on their way to the South Pole Station, where two of them will spend the winter. Three of the four are meteorologists who will maintain and run specialised weather-observation gear and take hourly recordings. This will be the third season that New Zealanders have taken part in the yearround South Pole meteorological programme.
