Uneasy tone in Australia
Gold and tin stocks dominated buying attention on Australian exchanges yesterday. Central Norseman Gold rose 10c to 640 c on the higher gold price, and Renison put on 50c to 590 c. Pancontinental dropped 30c to 720 c, but Kathleen was steady at 120 c. Most of the mining leaders retreated with CRA off 10c, MIM down 4c and Hamersley 2c lower. B.H.P. closed steady at 522 c after reaching 528 c. CSR changed hands steady at 283 c. Retailers were active and mixed. Coles dropped 1c to 163 c. Walton was up 1c to 80c, and David Jones put on 1c to 96c. Myer dropped 2c to 180 c. The banks steadied with the ANZ unchanged while the Bank of New South Wales gave up 2c to 502 c.
