Timaru boxer impressive
| PA New Plymouth I Perhaps the most impressive I boxer on the first day of the New Zealand boxing championships yesterday was senior flyweight Tony Attwood (Timaru). Attwood won a unanimous decision over Ray- Richards (Waikato) in the afternoon session and dealt with Keith Smith (Auckland) in the same wav in the evening. His extremely fast punching had both opponents worried. Brian Eddy (Manawatu) was another to gain two wins on the first day. He had a tough battle in the afternoon against Waikato’s Ross Picard and the southpaw had to call up all his reserves of energy to outbox Paul Tarrant (Timaru) in the. evening. > An unknown Samoan boxer [caused a major upset yesterday
afternoon by flooring a senior light welter-weight hopeful. Ross O’Connell (Hutt Valley) in the third round. Folasi Raynor, of Auckland, has only been in the country three months, but he outclassed O’Connell. Earlier Westport’s R. Warren had the distinction of being the first competitor at the championships to stop his opponent before the end of the regulation three rounds. He halted R Gibbs (Canterbury) in the second round of their senior light-weight bout. Results involving other Canter, bury boxers: Intermediate light-weight: A. Afamasaga (Wellington) beat B. Barry (Canterbury),- unanimous; J. Coombe (Taranaki > beat Afaimasaga, stopped contest Senior light-weight: B. Slatter i (Canterbury) beat P. Priest (Taranaki), unanimous.
