Rush to beat postal increases
Thousands of letters and parcels poured into the Christchurch Post Office on Friday, as people tried to beat the postal increases. “Normal figures are about 110,000 letters a day,” said the acting manager of postal services (Mr W. B. Morland). “On Friday 179,000 were posted; the day before 144,000.” The Post Office normally clears the daily intake, but on Saturday staff worked overtime to clear a backlog of 90,000 items. Business houses also sought to beat the increase from 7c to 10c for accounts posted. Normally 40,000 are posted daily, but 130,000 were posted in Christchurch on Friday. A suburban post ioffice, normally handling about 700 accounts a day, re- ' ceived about 5000 more than ’usual on Friday. Senders of Christmas parcels to Britain were quick ■to get them away. A 10kg (parcel, which would have I cost $9 on Friday, now costs lsls.
