Heroin fear leads to fines

PA Auckland A Mount Wellington couple decided to grow their own cannabis because they were afraid of buying heroin-laced cannabis, the Magistrate's Court at Otahuhu heard yesterday. Karen Roslyn Smith, aged 19, an assembler, and Darryl Waiter Hoet, aged 20, a petrol station attendant, admitted growing a cannabis plant* in the wardrobe of their flat.

Sergeant Graham said the wardrobe was lined with foil and had a lighting system to give the plant ideal conditions for growth. Also in the flat was a book on cannabis growing.

Both admitted watering and spraying the 46cm (18in) high plant with liquid fertiliser daily. Counsel, Mr T. Lyon, said they smoked cannabis intermittently but disliked the unsavoury characters they had to associate with to buy the drug, and were afraid of heroin lacing.

He said it was ludicrous that the girl had been able to buy a step-by-step book on cannabis growing in a Queen Street shop. Both had good family relationships.

Mr T. G. Maxwell, S.M., ordered the immediate payment of a fine of $lOO each, adding that if they did not pay they would be jailed for a month. He ordered the destruction of the plant, instruction book, and growing equipment.
