Big’ quake rocks Colombia

NZPA-Reuter A powerful earthquake has shaken north-western and central Colombia homes, killing at least three persons. The police in the town of Apartado, about 610 km north-west of Bogota, say the earthquake, described by one Colombian source as “extremely intense,” destroyed several buildings, killing at least three persons. An ice cream parlour and several bars were among the buildings which collapsed. The United States Geological Survey in Washington said the tremor measured 6.6 on the open-ended Richter scale.

Preliminary seismic readings put the epicentre of the earthquake in the Pacific, about 240 km off Colombia’s northern coast.

[ The location is part of the ocean floor known to geologists as the “ring of fire,” an area around the rim of the Pacific that has frequent earthquake and volcanic activity.

One Apartado businessman : contacted by telephone said ambulances were travelling back and forth from the damaged buildings. He said there were many wounded.
