U.S. cash for Israeli office

NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States has financed the operations of an Israeli arms purchasing office in New York through S2.BM in foreign military credits, the Defence Department has said.

A Pentagon spokesman, Mr Tom Ross, said Israel had informed the United States on August 9 that it wished to end the financing arrangement, which began in December, 1975. The office had a staff of 200 people, he said. The “Washington Post,” which first reported the arrangement, said Israel apparently feared that the details of the office’s expenses might be disclosed.

Mr Ross said the arrangement was unique, but perfectly legal. He added that he did not think any other country had asked for similar aid.

For the last few years, the United States has extended about SIOOOM annually in military credits to Israel, half of which has been in the form of a gift.
