Motorway bridge at tender

Work will soon begin on a railway overbridge at Curletts Road, to provide the main link in the southern motorway between the Brougham Street extension and Blenheim Road.

The contract is out to tender, and according to the district civil engineer of the Ministry of Works (Mr M. R. Lancaster) “a lot of people have asked for the documents.” The contract will probably be let in a few weeks.

The piles of the railway overbridge were built a year ago, Mr Lancaster said. Additional money from the National Roads Board now allowed the superstructure to be built for a four-lane highway, and would bring the two north-bound lanes into use.

The beginning of the work will not greatly diminish the piles of shingle, near Wrights Road, in Lincoln Road. These will be cut into when the approaches to the Wrights Road and Lincoln Road bridges are prepared in two years.

The shingle heap at Curletts Road will form the approach to the latest overbridge.
