Gifts of $19,000 to university

Gifts of more than $19,000 have been given to the University of Canterbury. The Institution of Engineers has given $l5OO for equipment or books for the School of Engineering library. The Building Research Association has given $5OO towards research into prestressed concrete beamcolumn joint by the department of civil engineering. Three grants have been given by the Energy Research and Development Committee. A grant of $5500 has been given for research into “methanol from natural gas for engine fuel,” being carried out by Dr E. E. Graham, of the chemical engineering department of the university, and a member of the chemistry department at the University of Otago. The committee has given $9OOO towards research on small-scale electricity generation from process heat production, being carried out by Professor A. G. Williamson, of the chemical engineering department. A grant of $3200 has been given for research into new energy technology systems, being carried out by Dr D. Lindley, of the mechanical engineering department. A fatigue-testing machine has been given to the university by the New Zealand Railways. The machine has been on loan to the university since 1968.
