Timaru pair win race
PA Palmerston North I < Gary Sprague (Timaru) survived a crash late in the I race to win the Albert Auto!' 500 kilometre production saloon car event at Manfeild yesterday. Sprague and Leo Leonard, also of Timaru. had built up enough of a lead in their Chrysler Charger to push the car back on to the circuit and win in 4hr 17min 30.8 Wayne Wilkinson and Ray Harrington, of Auckland, were second, also in a Charger. A third Charger, driven by Inky Tulloch (Mataura) and Brian Green
(Palmerston North) finished third. Two Mazda RX2s chased Leonard’s Charger strongly, coming to within 3sec on lap 28, but one was put out with fuel pump problems and the other was slowed by failing brakes. Leonard set the fastest lap at Imin 32.095ec, and beat the existing lap record on one-third of his laps. Roger Hood and Bob Homewood (Cortina 2000 L), followed by two similar cars, won Class B» Wayne Jones and George Wilson (Datsun 180 B) won Class C and Neville Bailey and Ken Flashman (Datsun 120 Y), took Class D.
