Paparua tip gets a first thumbs-down
There will not be a new rubbish tip near Christchurch Airport if a recommendation of the Paparua County Council’s town-plan-ning hearing committee is i lecepted by the full council.
The Paparua County Council had applied for conditional use of land in the Pound Road - Hasketts Road area for a general rubbish tip. The hearing was told that the site was unsuitable because there was a risk of knderground water pollution. To a lesser degree a possible increased bird hazard at Christchurch Airport was another point against the tip the committee said.
Altogether. 129 objections to the proposal were received.
A full meeting of the Paparua County Council on September 5 will consider the committee’s recommendation.
The committee said it was not satisfied from the evidence given that the pit could be sealed to prevent pollution of the underground Water.
The North Canterbury Catchment Board, the Ministry of Works and Development, the Christchurch City Council, and the Wai-
1 mairi County Council and: most of the 122 individual ■ objectors did not want a tip on the proposed site because of possible danger to water isuppliea. A solution to the bird- ’ strike problem was needed urgently and. in the interests of public safety, the airport I authority and the Civil Aviai tion Division should make a dedicated attempt to find (that solution, the committee said. Evidence was given during I the hearing that jets using Christchurch Airport would I face greater risks from colli- | sions with gulls if a tip was built in the area.
