Recycling rubbish
Sir, — I write in reply to T. H. Duston (“The Press.” August 25) as one of the “naive” people who support rubbish recycling. Several Christchurch firms have attempted recycling; some have failed because of the difficulties in importing the necessary machinery, or because of the many pitfalls associated with any small enterprise. In various other countries successful rubbish recycling schemes are operating. With a minimal amount of effort from the public in separating rubbish before putting it out, the potential is there for a complete Christchurch recycling scheme. At the rate the world’s resources are running out I believe such steps as conservation and recycling are imperative, whether they are simple and cheap or not. This is fast becoming a matter of necessity, not just economics. — Yours, etc., HELEN CRABB. August 26, 1977.
