$2000 for Tongans

Earthquake victims in Tonga have been sent $2OOO by the National Council of Churches. Gifts from Corso, Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, and the World Council of Churches, which gave $lO,OOO, have now contributed more than $16,000 to the $60,000 appeal launched by the Tongan Council of Churches, according to the Rev. B. Turner, director of Christian World Service.

The Tongan Council of Churches also hoped to send people who had lost their homes in the earthquake to New Zealand so that they could help rebuilding by sending money back to Tonga, Mr Turner said. Hospitals, schools, churches. wharves, and about 60 homes had been levelled or badly damaged in the earthquake, he said.
