GREYHOUND RACING Stamina to beat speed in puppy classic

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

The Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club has two important features on the programme for its meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park this Sunday.

The America’s Cup for puppies has drawn a class field, but there is an unusual aspect associated with the field. None of the fancied runners are known for their speed from the boxes and the 540 m race could have a spectacular finish with the front-runners being overhauled in the finishing straight by several renowned strong finishers.

If class is to be considered, the black litter sisters, Bishopdale Lass and Highsted Lass, should prevail. They have drawn the inside boxes, although that advantage will not necessarily assist them if they are slow on leaving the traps.

Bishopdae Lass ran a tremendous race a fortnight ago to finish third in the final of the New Zealand Fairchild sprint series.

The young Chief Zero—Tip Top bitch led home several of the country’s top-rated dogs and a repeat of that run could see her in the winner’s circle.

Her sister, Highsted Lass, is another doughty performer and she will be a danger if she has a clear passage along the home straight. Eileen McManus, which was injured at her last appearance, has obviously made a good recovery for she was the fastest qualifier from the heats.

However, she too is another which gets back in the early running and it remains to be seen whether the fancied trio can run down the likely pacesetters, Ariki’s Babe and Trusty Hobbs. The improved Hobson’s Choice 11, must also be rated a chance.

The Rendezvous Kennels Stakes for bitches has a mixed field and with a reasonable run. Torianna Charm, the fastest qualifier, should presail. She won a consolation of the Fairchild series most impressively and has been in great form lately. Happy Ending, a most consistent bitch, will pose a threat from the inside box. and the I heat winners, Anna's Retreat

and Swift Princess, have a good background of form. 1 Fields are:— Edinburgh Stakes, novice 350 m i (1.30 p.m.).—Norah Der, Mica Moss, Personality Gay, Tamariki.
